The sweeping majority of viruses are not used for widespread destruction. They do little things, the most common of which is to give backdoor access to your machine. That can be a big deal, but the virus itself isn't harmful.

They are tools for accomplishing an end, not an end in themselves.

It's called a backup for a reason
Everytime I get a virus I'm not gonna resort to wasting about an hour of my day to wipe out my hard drive
Not including resetting all my personal settings
People who do that wouldn't be the brightest bulbs
